Stuff you must know in Bible study. Do follow. 

Ephesians 1:17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: I want to quickly point your attention to this verse of the Bible. Many may ask themselves what is the "spirit of wisdom"? Oh, it must have been one of the 7 Spirits of God talked about in the Book of Revelation. 

Revelation 4:5 And out of the throne proceeded lightnings and thunderings and voices: and there were seven lamps of fire burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. Well, that's not true. Revelations remain revelation, Visions remain vision if not explained. But there is no such thing as seven Spirits of God throughout the Epistles (explanations). 

Throughout the Epistles, it's ONE SPIRIT. 

1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. Ephesians 2:18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father. 

Ephesians 4:4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; That said, but what is "spirit of wisdom"? Is "He" different from the "Holy Spirit" or is it another dimension of the Spirit? A subset of the Spirit? Co-worker? As I continue, I want you to know that in BIBLE study, you must take note of CASES (letters, capital or small).

As it helps you to identify specifically, who/what the word refers to. We recognize God, the Son and the Holy Spirit, with pronouns such as, "He, Him, His" but not, "he, him, his". The Bible was compiled that way. The word "spirit" in the Greek lexicon is "pneuma" which means: mind (heart) soul, the Holy Spirit [of God]. So to identify which is which, we must look at the verse of study in context. 

Back to Ephesians 1:7, the "pneuma" used here is translated into a lower case "spirit" meaning that it wasn't referring to the SPIRIT OF GOD. Both in KJV and NKJV. How would Paul keep praying for them to have the Spirit of God (wisdom) again after he had earlier said they were sealed with the Spirit of promise, which is the Spirit of God? It shows that they have Him already! 

Ephesians 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, That's not right. He's not talking about the Holy Spirit. Again let's look at this verse, this time replacing the "pneuma" here with other meaning of the word.

Ephesians 1:17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the [heart] of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: Now an understanding is unveiled. Preferably, I would pick the second as it fits more into the chapter for a clearer understanding and for consistency, [though any could be used]. 

Verse 17 explains that the Apostle Paul prayed for the Ephesians that they may have a "heart" of wisdom and [Grk "and" is "Kai" meaning "which is or that is"] revelation as they know Him. Don't be confused, I'll take it again. 

Ephesians 1:17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the [heart] of wisdom [that is] revelation as you know him. (my version) So here, the "spirit of wisdom" simply is "revelation through knowledge". So Paul prayed for them that they may have the heart [of wisdom] to understand God more as He's revealed unto them, that is, as they know Him more. 

Now the latter verse 18 is consistent with 17, 

Another prayer follows, that as they know Him more, they understand what they have, what their inheritances are in Him. 

Ephesians 1:18 The eyes of your understanding BEING enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, So in other words, the more of God you know, the more of your identity you uncover. Back to discussion. 

The word "spirit" is not [always] the same as the Spirit of God. Please, take note that for a better understanding as it is used in throughout KJV. See these verses: 

Romans 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit (mind, heart) of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. Romans 12:11 Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit (mind, heart); serving the Lord; 

Ephesians 4:23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; Here is a tautology, it's simply, "And be renewed in your mind". The word is specific this time, MIND. In addition, at some points in the KJV Bible "spirit" was used to represent "Spirit" which is totally wrong but in the NKJV, they have been corrected ( at least, some I've spotted). 

1. 1 Corinthians 2:12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the [spirit] which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. (KJV) Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. (NKJV) 

2. 2 Corinthians 3:8 How shall not the ministration of the [spirit] be rather glorious? (KJV) how will the ministry of the Spirit not be more glorious? (NKJV) 

3. 1 Peter 4:14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the [spirit] of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified. (KJV) If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified. (NKJV) 

 As well as pronouns 

4. 2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made [him] to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in [him]. (KJV) For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. (NKJV) 

 5. ETC. Friends, I can't mention them all. But this is why you MUST study the rest on your own. They refer to the Godhead but represented in lower case. It could be misleading to mean something else in both sides.

So, contextual study helps you to understand the Bible and some versions that are not totally rightly translated at some points, as you don't misplace "spirit" which means the mind, heart, or understanding for "Spirit" which is the Holy Spirit and "Him" for "him".
