Tithing may be biblically defined as the giving of the 10% of the increase of spoils, harvests per time. Tithing was a law to the Jews. But why the Law? The Levites being the priesthood clan were not permitted to work anywhere outside the temple. But they also must eat. Yes... The tithes served as their reward. What they earned for their labour.
Malachi 3:10 Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house... Every Law obeyed was with a blessing and a curse for disobedience. Read (Deuteronomy 28) But before the Law came, Abram tithed? It wasn't a law then. Yes. It happened. It was a willing act. He wasn't compelled to do that. He did from his good will not because he was told to.
Hebrews 7:1 For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;
7:2 To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;
The origin of tithing in the Bible came from WILLINGLINESS and not as a LAW. It was until the law that it became a MUST. BUT WE ARE NO LONGER UNDER SUCH LAWS. (The very first thing to know) Tithing was/is never an instruction under the NEW COVENANT. Whether or not you tithe today does not in any way affect what Christ did for you already. It doesn't make God bless you more or the reverse. The Apostles never taught that. It was never a doctrine Jesus laid. It was GIVING ALL through Love to Believers and not Levites.
Acts 2:44 And all that believed were together, and had all things common;
2:45 And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.
2:46 And they, continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, did eat their meat with gladness and singleness of heart,
Tithing is not a thing to be taken as a DO or DIE business as so many preachers do today. 7 steps to receiving Gods blessings… No. 1 Tithing. No! Never! God forbid!
Yes, it is understandable that the church needs money to run things around. Money is needed for almost everything. This is not an enough reason to scare people to PAYING and hence BASTARDIZING the Gospel of blessing without works. Jesus PAID that we may not PAY.
Ministers should put a clear cut between WE NEED MONEY and GOD WANTS YOUR MONEY else heaven is sealed over you. Thats brutal. Moreover, From Genesis to Malachi, Tithing was never a MONETARY thing, it was harvest of crops! If emphasis would be laid on Tithing, at least, let it be the way it originally was.
1. Bring Banana, Yam and Grapes to the Pulpit.
2. Abram the source GAVE without being pestered to do so, he did not PAY.
Should you give? Yes. But you must understand that WHATEVER you give (offering, helps, donations etc.), reguardlessof its quantity doesn't make you anyway farther away from or closer to God than others but a RESPONSE to a divine love you have seen. This was what the Apostles taught!
2 Corinthians 9:7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; NOT grudgingly, or OF NECESSITY: for God loveth a cheerful giver.
Note the uppercased, It implies that you give not because you are forced to. Have a right sense to giving. It supersedes just 10%; it's ALL, what you have. Doing it RIGHT is of a great gain. We are not in bondage to Tithing. Hope it helps someone.
Blessed.
