HEARTBEAT (Poetry)
Dedicated to Moyinoluwa, a nursing student.

Thump-thump, thump-thump
my heart beats. And the rhythm
in my ears leads peace.

Before I knew what reality was;
she was.
Before I saw the first light;
she was. Before I heard the
first sound; she was.

Before I felt my first love;
she was.
She confirmed life to Papa;
Brought hope to Mama;
Gave joy to Others.

And now my Steth sings:
“She knew reality
before you; She knew peace
before you; She played love
before you—your heart beat.

So, When the ocean of doubts
comes; When the wind of
loneliness blows; When the
fear of uncertainty storms;
And the touch of reality
is gone. Close your eyes,
little one. Close your eyes.

Hear your heartbeat.
Hear your heart speak:
Thump-thump, thump-thump.
Be still, little beauty. Be still.”
